Rev John Murdo Smith
Many friends in Harris and further afield were saddened to hear today that the Rev John Murdo Smith of Clachan North Uist passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Mr Smith ministered faithfully in the Presbytery of Uist for over 60 years, firstly at Howmore South Uist and then in Lochmaddy and Truimsgarry, North Uist, and for many years in preaching to and providing pastoral support in retirement too. We all remember him with deep affection as a gentle, serene, Spirit-filled pastor of the people of God who leaves an enduring legacy to his family and all who knew him. We prayerfully remember Mrs Margaret Smith and all the family in their loss.
Rev John Murdo was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours in June 2016 and in token of which a presentation was made to Rev Mr Smith at the Presbytery’s meeting in Leverburgh Church.

The second photo below shows the Rev John Murdo and Mrs Margaret Smith, along with
the Rev William and Mrs Margaret Macleod and Rev Alasdair and Mrs Mary Macdonald, at a special service in 2007 at St Columba’s Stornoway marking fifty years of ministry of Rev’s Macdonald and Macleod.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am tomorrow (Thursday, December 15) at Clachan Church of Scotland.
There will be a collection in aid of Clachan Church Funds and Tagsa Uibhist.

FARE SHARE HARRIS
At the meeting of the Kirk Session and the ACTS Group last Thursday evening it was agreed that we would support the work of the Fare Share Group in Harris.
Fare Share provides a confidential food and other support service to people in Harris and have been doing this since the start of the first lockdown. Some of the food comes from the National Fare Share scheme and is supplemented by donations locally. This is different to the Western Isles Food-bank where all donations go to Stornoway and where folk need to go and collect if they are in need. With the Fare Share scheme people let us know they are in need of help and we will arrange for a box of food and other support to be dropped off by one of our volunteers.
In response to the current cost of living crisis we are putting together Support Boxes to give to anyone who may be finding it difficult to keep warm. Things like gloves, hats, also torches, batteries, candles, matches, etc that folk would need, even if they do not necessarily need food boxes. It is hoped to launch this at the Charities Fayre in the Community Centre at the start of December.
We are therefore setting the Sunday morning services on 20th and 27th November as opportunities for anyone who wants to help to bring tins of food stuff to donate. We will have special boxes in the Macrae Centre for these.
